At Home
ClimateSmart programs in the residential sector focus on empowering residents to understand the source of their personal greenhouse gas emissions and take action to reduce their carbon footprint. Energy use in our homes accounts for approximately 16% of the city’s total emissions. There are many cost effective improvements that can be made to drastically reduce the energy use in the residential sector. The programs we offer in the residential sector aim to focus on education, energy efficiency and renewable energy.
The logical order for reducing a carbon footprint is to first focus on conservation, reducing actual energy use, not having to produce the energy in the first place. Secondly, we focus on efficiency, making sure that the energy that we do use is used with maximum efficiency. Once we have conserved and become as efficient as possible we promote using renewable energy to change the fuel source that produces the energy we need from a non-renewable resource (coal, gas, etc) to a renewable resource (wind, solar, etc.).
